During the sixth grade year, all students, both those enrolled in the Meyer Kranzberg Learning Center and Jewish day schools, and their parent(s) are invited to participate in a series of five family workshops and one parent meeting.  The B'nai Mitzvah workshops offer the opportunity for families to begin their preparation for their B’nai Mitzvah as part of our community.

These workshops offer opportunities to strengthen community connections and learn about important aspects of their upcoming B’nai Mitzvah in both large and small groups. These workshops also offer the opportunity to begin studying with B’nai Amoona’s Klei Kodesh team. Workshops are held on Sunday mornings. Topics covered in these workshops include:

Sanctuary 101

An opportunity for families to learn about our sanctuary, the Torah and practice having an Aliyah.

Tefillin Workshop

An opportunity for families to learn about the mitzvah of “laying” Tefillin. This workshop includes time to practice putting on Tefillin and an opportunity to see the insides and learn about how Tefillin are made. This workshop is usually held in conjunction with the Men’s Club World Wide Wrap. The Men’s Club work with the students ahead of time, building their own set of Mock Tefillin and then the 6th grade families join the Men’s Club on Super bowl Sunday for the World Wide Wrap.

Tzitzit Workshop

A favorite workshop for families, during this morning we learn about the Mitzvah of wearing Tallit and then each pre-B’nai Mitzvah student has the opportunity to design and make their own original Tallit throughout the year, including learning how to tie tzitzit.

Creating a Vision of Your Bar/Bat Mitzvah

A morning of vision creation and community forming for all 6th graders and their parents.

Judaic Roadshow

Our own Judaic Roadshow with local Judaic collector Marc Lapp. We explore the meaning and significance of our family Judaica and discuss how these pieces bring added significance to our Jewish celebrations.

Parent Meeting

A meeting for parents to learn about the nitty gritty details of the B’nai Mitzvah process. Parents learn about the preparation timeline, training sessions, and Kiddush costs. This workshop is presented by the B’nai Mitzvah Coordinator in conjunction with the BA Klei Kodesh and staff.

Third Grade B’nai Mitzvah Journey

B’nai Mitzvah dates are handed out each year to our third graders. This is done during our B’nai Mitzvah Journey. Parents come together to begin the B’nai Mitzvah journey with a study opportunity with Rabbi Rose and Liessa Alperin helping families think about what actions they can begin in order start their family on the best path for the B’nai Mitzvah experience they envision. Following the conversation the students begin their journey by receiving their date, a blessing and a book to help mark this important milestone.
