D'var Torah From Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham -Beshalach-
When reflecting on the ups and downs of this last year in the pandemic, I began thinking about our experience in this week's Parashah, Beshalach. This is a watershed moment in our Torah, as we finally, after all of the hardships in Egypt, are told by Pharaoh that we can leave Egypt once and for all. Can you imagine the exuberance for most of the Israelites as they begin to depart? Of course, that excitement is immediately stymied as Pharaoh changes his mind again and sends his troops after them. We all know how this miraculous episode ends, as the Israelites cross the Sea of Reeds, and the Egyptians are swallowed up.
What I am always drawn to in this story is the celebration that occurs right after the Israelites are safe on shore, as Miriam and the women, in praise, dance with her timbrels (15:21). However, God reminds us that we must not celebrate the loss of life but instead celebrate our freedom and the miracles we experience in our own lives.
Many of us are grieving and have experienced great pain in our lives. However, this Parshah reminds us that we must move forward and take time to appreciate God's constant miracles and pronounce “Zeh Ehli - This is My God...” (15:2) As we also celebrated Tu B’Shevat yesterday, we should be grateful for the bountiful harvests Our God and our trees and plants bring us year after year.
The Israelites quickly promised to be faithful to God, yet three days later were complaining about the food (15:24), almost forgetting “yesterday’s” breathtaking miracle. God recalibrates, and perhaps this is how and why we now see God’s more modest miracles each and every day. I hope that for all of us, we are able to metaphorically cross our own sea into freedom and peace of mind as we continue to support each other and grow even more together as a community.

About Hadar Orshalimy and Saturday Night's Virtual Performance:
Hadar hails from TLV and since graduating from the Berklee College of Music has gone on to perform for such audiences as Barack Obama, George W Bush, Bill Clinton, and Ehud Barack, to name a few. In December of 2019 Hadar released her album "It Never Was You - Jazz by Jewish composers" to critical acclaim to honor the enormous contribution made by Jewish composers to the distinctly american art form of jazz.
On Jan. 30th at 6:30 pm, NYC-based vocalist Hadar, and her all-star band of Jewish musicians, are performing a live full band virtual concert of songs from the Great American Songbook, and the funny, fascinating, and heart wrenching stories of the Jewish composers who wrote the vast majority of it.
This intimate and innovative evening gives participants from around the country the opportunity to interact live with one another and the artist, as she breathes new life into some of the most iconic songs in history using unique arrangements and cutting edge video technology. After the performance there will also be a Q&A.
Hadar is married to former B'nai Amoona member and graduate of Solomon Schechter Day School (now Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School), Sheldon Low. Sheldon is also an accomplished singer and musician who performs regularly with Hadar.
