Celebrate Purim at B'nai Amoona
Todah Rabbah ~ Thank You Very Much ~ to our generous Purim sponsors, our B'nai Amoona Board of Trustees!

What is
Purim?

We read in the Book of Esther that the Jewish people in the ancient city of Shushan were threatened by the evil prime minister Haman. Haman convinced King Ahasuerus to kill all the Jews after Mordecai, the Jewish leader, refused to bow down to Haman. Haman cast lots to determine the date of when to kill the Jewish people - the 13th of Adar - but Queen Esther, who married King Ahasuerus, revealed herself to be Jewish and thus, King Ahasuerus decides to reverse Haman’s decree. Instead of the Jews being killed, Haman, his sons, and other enemies are killed.

Purim is the Hebrew word for "lots." Today, we celebrate our salvation from Haman by reading the Megillah, dressing up in costumes/masks, eating Hamantashen (triangular pastries), and giving Mishloach Manot gifts. During the reading of the Megillah, we also make noise and spin groggers when Haman's name is said to show our opposition to him and "mask" his name.
