D'var Torah From Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham
- Sukkot-
It's our last chance to wipe the slate clean and start anew. We are at the midway point of Sukkot, and Monday night begins Shemini Atzeret (the 8th day of Sukkot where we begin praying for rain), followed by Simchat Torah (the celebration of our ending and beginning our Torah again) on Tuesday evening.
During this time, we let the decorum we felt only a few days ago on Yom Kippur fly out the window, celebrating together throughout. On Simchat Torah, we will end the reading of the Torah and start right back up with Breishit, Genesis, “In the Beginning.”
The question worth pondering is why we need to have Simchat Torah right at the end of Sukkot and so soon after our High Holidays? We have already wiped out our sins and started over again on Yom Kippur, followed by our happiness of celebrating Sukkot together and remembering our shared Biblical history. Now, however, we end this long month of holidays with a final hurrah.
The rabbis tell us that this is our last chance to “get it right.” Just in case we didn't do as we should have on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, or even Sukkot, we are reminded one last time that we get a chance to start over and learn something new about ourselves as we begin the Torah all over. Simchat Torah reminds us that nothing is perfect in our lives. This is why we have such an important holiday to celebrate, ending and then beginning the Torah again. It is a reminder for all of us that every year we have a chance to learn new things about ourselves and grow from our experiences in both our Judaism and lives in general.
Together, we can continue to learn and grow from our shared experiences and make 5782 a year of joy and learning.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!
Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham
Anne and Rick Mazur are our 5782 Bride and Groom of the Torah. Rick is a second-generation member of BA and Anne joined along with their three sons (David, Benjamin and Joshua) when the family moved to St. Louis from Maryland. Anne was first introduced to B’nai Amoona when she met former BA Cantor, Hazzan Renzer, who assisted Rabbi Skop in officiating their wedding. Both Anne and Rick have served as board members.
After Rick’s father passed away, he found comfort and support while attending Minyan. He has been a Minyanaire for 21 years now and leads Davening on Sunday mornings. He particularly looks forward to the Sundays when there is a Pre-Bar or Bat Mitzvah Participation and the Worldwide Wraps on Superbowl Sunday. Rick can also be found volunteering in Chef Jon’s kitchen because preparing and eating good food is a passion of his.
Almost everyone at B’nai Amoona refers to Anne as “Morah Anne” because she taught in the BA Early Childhood Center for 31 years. Anne retired from teaching at the end of the 2020-2021 school year saying that she “finally graduated,” but you will still find her helping at the preschool library, which is her passion. Rick says he’s amazed at the number of parents that recognize Anne outside of B’nai Amoona and still address her as Morah Anne. Anne, when she is able, enjoy’s Rabbi Neal Rose’s “Thinking Person’s Judaism” class where Rick is also a regular.
Rick and Anne are humbled and grateful to be selected for this honor and look forward to seeing everyone at Simchat Torah.
We are thrilled to celebrate this year's Bride and Groom of the Torah, Anne and Rick Mazur during Simchat Torah. Please help us to honor them during our Simchat Torah Services on Wednesday, September 29. The Mazurs have been a dedicated family to our Kehillah and truly encompass what it means to be a Mensch. For additional ways to help celebrate our Bride and Groom of the Torah, please contact

Simchat Torah is sponsored by Michael, Laura, Samuel,
