All are invited to join us this Shabbat for our Juneteenth commemoration. As Jews, many of our traditions and rituals are rooted in remembering that we were once slaves. However, it is important for us to recognize Juneteenth's significance to Black Americans.
Together, we will listen and learn from our guest speakers, Kisha Greenidge Kader and Ruth Banks of the Change and Action for Racial Equity (C.A.R.E.) group. We will also move forward remembering that we are all made B'Tzelem Elohim, in the image of God.
About Kisha Greenidge Kader: Kisha is the Founder and Director of Change and Action for Racial Equity (C.A.R.E.) where she passionately pursues change in racial and social injustice and making a difference in our community. She is also a wife, mom, and book enthusiast. She was born and raised in Barbados and now lives in St. Louis where she works in corporate America.
About Ruth Banks: Ruth is a Board Member at C.A.R.E., an educator for over 40 years, and social justice activist. She's also an active member of the National Council of Negro Women, Bertha Black Rhoda Section. Her academic background includes Washington University, UMSL, and earning her Doctorate in Executive Educational Leadership from SLU.
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

“And the Almighty spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and say to him, When you mount the lamps, let the seven lamps give light at the front of the lampstand.’’
All too often, I hear from my students about how “irrelevant and anachronistic” the narratives of the Torah are to them. And though I must admit there are such times even for me, this week’s Parashah, and especially its opening lines, are surely not one of those occasions. For if we take the time to look closely at the text, delve beyond its surface meanings, and allow our hearts to be truly open, we will discover an exquisite and potentially transformative life lesson encoded in the sacred words of our Parashah. click here to read more...
