BA Week at a Glance - 04.17.20

Shalom Friends!

Today, this Erev Shabbat, Eve of Shabbat, has a special Hebrew name. It is referred to as Isru Chag. This term literally means “Binding oneself to the Holy-Day” and is taken from the words in the Psalm 118:27, “Bind the festival offerings with cords to the corners of the sacrificial altar”. This verse is used in the Hallel Prayers that we chant on the various Chagim, our sacred celebrations. The idea is that we yearn to cling, for as long as we possibly can, to the unique Ruchaniut, spiritual energy, that each of our Yontiffs possesses.

So, on this day immediately following Acharon Shel Pesach, the last day of a most unusual Passover, what spiritual energy might we want to “bind ourselves to”?

For me, this year the message is abundantly clear and comes directly from one of my favorite parts of the Seder Rite, the Korech, the Hillel Sandwich. In this one ritual, we bring together the Matzah, the bread of affliction; the Passover Sacrifice, the Korban Pesach marking God’s deliverance of our people even as our enemies were being punished for their trespasses; the Maror, the bitter herbs that remind us of the harshness of servitude; and finally, the Charoset, the sweet admixture of apples, wine, dates, and nuts that recalls the bricks that we were forced to fashion for the cruel Pharaoh’s pyramids, which often included the crushed bones of our enslaved ancestors.

This ritualized eating is a form of integrating by imbibing the complexity of human existence – especially for our often beleaguered people. There is of course elation, celebration, triumph and merriment. But we also have known and continue to contend with illness, death, reversal and disappointment. It is as the famous Israeli song (click below to hear a beautiful magisterial rendition of the song) posits – “Al HaDvash VeAl HaOketz, Al MaMar VeHamatok - Every bee that brings the honey, needs a sting to be complete. And we all must learn to taste both the bitter with the sweet.”

In the end, this is the human condition and if we can successfully frame our lives in this way, as a balance of successes and failures, wins and losses, and still hold out hope that there are better days ahead (a la the notion of Next Year in Jerusalem found at the very end of the Haggadah), then we can remain ever hopeful, ever optimistic, and ever eager to see what splendor, blessing, and beneficence our future hold for us, our people and the human family. And this is the hope that I am binding myself to as we take leave of Passover 2020/5780.

Zoom Bombing - Oy Vey!

B'nai Amoona is now using Zoom for many of our classes, meetings and Services. New technologies coming into common use means new challenges.

Among our (and just about every other organization’s) challenges is something called “Zoom Bombing.” Zoom Bombing is when uninvited individuals break into and disrupt Zoom meetings. There are lots of articles around describing this phenomena, and providing helpful hints on how to mitigate the problem. We actually locked down many aspects of our primary Zoom account a week and a half ago. We have disallowed screen sharing and annotations for all users, except the host(s) of a session. This alone takes care of the bulk of the problem. For certain meetings, we have employed the “Waiting room” technique for many classes, requiring the host to explicitly allow each participant to enter a session.

Nonetheless, we did have one instance of Zoom bombing this week, so we are employing additional techniques. We will no longer be posting our Zoom links on any social media outlets or on a public facing webpage. We will continue to email our Zoom links out to our Congregants, but ask that you are cautious about who you forward or share that information with. We will also be adding the links to THIS "Members Only" page of our website that will require you to use your ShulCloud account login for access. We will continue to evaluate the performance of our communication mechanism and adjust techniques, as needed. It is also strongly recommended that everyone using Zoom update their Zoom mobile app or desktop client to the most recent version, as Zoom is constantly upgrading and adding additional security features. LRECC

Our LRECC teachers are creating videos from our classroom and specialist teachers to be uploaded via Facebook, using Zoom to do virtual class activities with their students, and Face Timing students and/or parents as needed. Anyone is welcome to join our LRECC Facebook page. This page is where you can connect to other parents and view uploads, etc. If you are not a current LRECC family, but would like your child included in our virtual classes, please email Anita Kraus, anita@bnaiamoona.com, with your contact information.

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICES

We are proud to be partnering with the Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Services and all area congregations in a coordinated effort to help those hit hardest by this pandemic.

Holocaust Museum & Learning Center encourages everyone to commemorate Yom HaShoah virtually this year. Yom HaShoah 2020 falls on the evening of Tuesday, April 22, through the following day. In today’s unprecedented circumstances, The Holocaust Museum & Learning Center encourage the St. Louis community to fulfill the intent of Yom HaShoah by learning about the Holocaust and finding inspiration in the lives and words of St. Louis survivors and witnesses. On their website, HMLC.org, visitors can access short video segments focusing on the Museum’s permanent exhibition, as well as a virtual tour of the Museum. In addition, visitors can access numerous recorded testimonies drawn from our Oral Histories Project. These first-person voices include descriptions of the richness of life before the Holocaust, the horrors of the camps, the uncertainty and desperation of life in hiding, and the renewal of life in the post-War years. You may also follow the tradition of lighting a memorial candle on Yom Hashoah. We encourage you to spend some time during this season of renewal, remembering the incalculable loss of life and potential which the Holocaust represents.

Blood Drive

We are looking for artists for this biannual show. You do not need to be Jewish to apply; this is a juried art fair. Mediums we accept include: ceramics, digital art, drawing, fibers, glass, jewelry, metalworks, mixed media, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and wood.
